Smoking cessation represents the single most important step that smokers can take to enhance the length and quality of their lives. But quitting smoking is easier said than done. When you suddenly quit smoking, it sets off a series of uncomfortable physical and psychological effects. Since these effects are hard to resist, the smoker often recommences his smoking habit. To have the best chance of quitting successfully, it is important that you realize the true dangers of nicotine on the body, how to deal with undesirable after effects of quitting smoking and – most importantly – how to overcome the withdrawal symptoms and stay away from smoking.

Nicotine, a drug found in cigarettes, is highly addictive – in fact as addictive as heroin or cocaine. Hence, in no time a person becomes physically and emotionally addicted to and sometimes dependent on nicotine. Nicotine produces pleasant feelings that make the smoker want to smoke more. As the nervous system adapts to nicotine, smokers tend to increase the number of cigarettes they smoke, and therefore the amount of nicotine in their blood. Over time, the smoker reaches a certain nicotine level and then smokes to maintain this level of nicotine. When such a smoker suddenly tries to quit, the nicotine levels in the body drops and creates an irresistible urge to surge back. These effects can lead the smoker to start smoking cigarettes again to boost blood levels of nicotine back to a level where there are no symptoms.

When smokers try to cut back or quit, the lack of nicotine leads to certain characteristic withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms are especially obvious in the case of chain smokers who suddenly stop using tobacco or greatly reduce the amount smoked. These effects of quitting smoking that generally start within a few hours of the last cigarette and peak about 2 to 3 days later, may include depression, sleep disturbances, irritability, headache, fatigue and increased appetite. Some people may also experience conditions like restlessness, dizziness and feelings of frustration and anger. In most people, these symptoms can last for a few days to up to several weeks.

The withdrawal symptoms can be both physiological and emotional. While physically the body reacts to the absence of nicotine, the smoker is mentally faced with giving up a habit that may seem like a major behaviour makeover. Studies have shown that smokers must deal with both the physical and psychological dependence to be successful at quitting and staying quit. Both these effects must be adequately addressed for a successful quitting process to work.

If you are a smoker, no doubt you have considered some type of program to stop smoking. But has it ever gotten past the "consideration" stage? Maybe you actually tried to quit smoking a few times but the withdrawal symptoms got to you so badly that you went back to the cigs after a day or two.

Does that sound like you? I’m not going to bore you with the truckload of reasons you need to stop smoking because chances are that you already know those reasons and could recite them from memory at the drop of a hat. It’s not cool anymore. It does not present you with a macho or tough perspective to others. It smells. And your life insurance premiums are almost doubled if you are a smoker. But you already know this.

What are your excuses? No time to concentrate on what you perceive to be a huge task to quit smoking? No time to lock yourself in a monastery until you have gotten over the withdrawal symptoms? You don’t really see it as a health risk? Hopefully your answer is not that last one, or if it is, I have some oceanfront property in Kansas and a bridge in New York I’d like to sell you.

Chances are that one of the main showstoppers in your quit smoking campaign is your fear of the withdrawal symptoms that will "inevitably" occur. Studies have shown that this is one of the main reasons that people do not stick with a program. But if that is the case, you have not looked far enough and are leaning on that flimsy excuse as your reason for not working to kick the habit.

All people are different and the technique that works for one person may not be successful with another. Maybe the thought of going cold turkey scares the snot out of you. The key is that you need to find the technique that works for you, and there are a lot of them out there. There is nicotine chewing gum, there are cochlear implants, there is hypnosis, and it is almost a guarantee that there is a method out there that will prove to be successful for you.

But what about the withdrawal symptoms? Largely, those are all in your head. Sure there is a certain amount of chemical dependency with cigarettes but not nearly as much as the general public would have you believe based on "common knowledge". Most of these programs address the withdrawal aspect of it also and set you up with tasks and lessons that teach you how to avoid and overcome the withdrawals. You are not going to get the shakes and you are not going to gain 50 pounds just because you quit smoking, not unless you allow it to happen. If you do allow that to happen, studies have shown that this is only a self-torture technique where your mind is playing "see I told you so" tricks on you, and you have chosen to believe it. Yes, it is a choice.

You have the power within you to stop smoking so make this a priority and start today. Not tomorrow because you have been meaning to start this "tomorrow" for years, but rather, start today, right now. If the over-the-counter aids at the drugstore don’t work for you, then see your doctor for some prescription help. You CAN stop smoking, and nobody knows that better than you yourself.
