Withdrawal From Smoking

If you are a smoker, no doubt you have considered some type of program to stop smoking. But has it ever gotten past the "consideration" stage? Maybe you actually tried to quit smoking a few times but the withdrawal symptoms got to you so badly that you went back to the cigs after a day or two.

Does that sound like you? I’m not going to bore you with the truckload of reasons you need to stop smoking because chances are that you already know those reasons and could recite them from memory at the drop of a hat. It’s not cool anymore. It does not present you with a macho or tough perspective to others. It smells. And your life insurance premiums are almost doubled if you are a smoker. But you already know this.

What are your excuses? No time to concentrate on what you perceive to be a huge task to quit smoking? No time to lock yourself in a monastery until you have gotten over the withdrawal symptoms? You don’t really see it as a health risk? Hopefully your answer is not that last one, or if it is, I have some oceanfront property in Kansas and a bridge in New York I’d like to sell you.

Chances are that one of the main showstoppers in your quit smoking campaign is your fear of the withdrawal symptoms that will "inevitably" occur. Studies have shown that this is one of the main reasons that people do not stick with a program. But if that is the case, you have not looked far enough and are leaning on that flimsy excuse as your reason for not working to kick the habit.

All people are different and the technique that works for one person may not be successful with another. Maybe the thought of going cold turkey scares the snot out of you. The key is that you need to find the technique that works for you, and there are a lot of them out there. There is nicotine chewing gum, there are cochlear implants, there is hypnosis, and it is almost a guarantee that there is a method out there that will prove to be successful for you.

But what about the withdrawal symptoms? Largely, those are all in your head. Sure there is a certain amount of chemical dependency with cigarettes but not nearly as much as the general public would have you believe based on "common knowledge". Most of these programs address the withdrawal aspect of it also and set you up with tasks and lessons that teach you how to avoid and overcome the withdrawals. You are not going to get the shakes and you are not going to gain 50 pounds just because you quit smoking, not unless you allow it to happen. If you do allow that to happen, studies have shown that this is only a self-torture technique where your mind is playing "see I told you so" tricks on you, and you have chosen to believe it. Yes, it is a choice.

You have the power within you to stop smoking so make this a priority and start today. Not tomorrow because you have been meaning to start this "tomorrow" for years, but rather, start today, right now. If the over-the-counter aids at the drugstore don’t work for you, then see your doctor for some prescription help. You CAN stop smoking, and nobody knows that better than you yourself.
